Letters describing Hanks' service with the 20th Regiment, New York State Militia, which was reorganized in 1861 to form the 80th Regiment, New York Infantry. Subjects include Army hospital conditions, battles and campaigns in Maryland and Virginia, contraband, Copperheads, religious activities in the U.S. Army, and slavery.
